Uva-ursi or Bearberry is a small woody shrub, which thrives in the mountains of Alfred Vogelís native Switzerland. The origin of its name is unclear but it is suggested that bears may have eaten the fruit with relish. The herb is first mentioned in 13th Century texts and it found a place in all the herbal traditional reference works and in most modern Pharmacoepias.
